Spitfire Class

Welcome to the Summer Term!

We are excited to begin the summer term! Although some mornings may be sunny, the weather can still be very changeable. Please ensure your child brings a waterproof coat for any unexpected showers. Additionally, all children should bring a named sun hat for warmer days.

The Curriculum

Our big question this term is:
How do we know dinosaurs existed?

The children will develop an understanding of changes beyond living memory. They will learn about significant individuals such as Mary Anning and William Buckland, and explore how we use evidence to find out about the past. They will also consolidate their scientific understanding of animal types (carnivore, omnivore, herbivore).

To enrich this topic, we will enjoy a Dinosaur Safari Day and a trip to All Things Wild.

English

In English, the children will explore a range of non-fiction texts about dinosaurs. As the term progresses, they will plan and write a non-chronological report about a dinosaur. They will continue developing their use of capital letters and full stops.

Phonics and Reading

  • Weekly phonics sounds will be sent home every Monday.
  • Colour-banded reading books will also be changed on Mondays.
  • The class shared reader will be sent home every Friday.

Phonics learning will continue following FFT planning.

Please read with your child at least 4 times a week and record this in their reading record.
Children should bring their reading record and reading book every day, as we read with them regularly during the week.

Maths

This term, children will learn:

  • Multiplication and division
  • Fractions
  • Position and direction
  • Place value up to 100

Please continue to practise counting forwards and backwards at home.

Science

We will begin by exploring materials, investigating their properties and grouping them. We will also continue learning about seasons as we move into summer.

PE

PE will take place on Tuesdays. This term’s focus is athletics and Sports Day. As sessions will often be outdoors, please ensure children wear appropriate clothing.

PE kit should include:

  • Blue t-shirt
  • Shorts, joggers, or leggings
  • Socks
  • Suitable outdoor trainers

Children should come to school already wearing their PE kit on Tuesdays.

Classroom Organisation

Space in the cloakroom and classroom is limited. Please ensure:

  • Bags and lunch boxes are a reasonable size
  • All items are clearly named

Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their belongings, but please continue to check for letters, messages, or emails daily.

Additional Information

  • Children should bring a named, refillable water bottle each day. These must be taken home and cleaned thoroughly every evening.
  • If your child has an inhaler, please ensure it is named, in date, and kept in school at all times.
  • If your child requires any other medication, please inform both the teacher and the school office.
