What is pupil premium?

The pupil premium grant provides funding to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in state-funded schools in England.  The service pupil premium (SPP) provides support for children and young people of service families.

Schools get pupil premium funding based on the number of eligible pupils they have from the following groups:

• Free School Meals (now or in the last 6 years)
• Looked-after and/or previously looked-after children
• Services children (although the service premium is not part of pupil premium)

How should the premium be spent?

Pupil premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils, and schools do not have to spend pupil premium so that it solely benefits pupils who meet the funding criteria. It can be used:

• to support other pupils with identified needs, such as those who have or have had a social worker, or who act as a carer
• for whole class interventions which will also benefit non-disadvantaged pupils

Schools must spend their pupil premium grant on evidence-informed activities in line with the ‘menu of approaches’ set by the Department for Education (DFE). This does not apply to SPP.

how do we use the pupil and service premiums?

The strategy document below sets out how much the school has received in the last academic year and how the premiums plan to be, and have previously been, spent.  This is a three-year strategy, although it is reviewed by 31st December each year to reflect the impact of previous actions.
