Useful information:

Forest learning is each Friday.

PE is each Thursday.

Books are changed on Friday.

We hope that you have had a wonderful Christmas and that your children are excited for the new term. We have lots planned for the coming months and are looking forward getting started on our new topic.

Our topic this term will be ‘Fantasy and Adventure’ and will focus on dragons, dinosaur’s princesses and knights. We will be enjoying lots of different activities focusing on the stories such as ‘The Teeny Weeny Genie’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘I am yours’ by Alex Latimer. Our Role Play area will begin as Old McDonald’s farm where the children can re-enact the story we are learning dressing up as the different characters. Later in the term this will change to be a dinosaur kingdom, allowing children to explore different textures and the environment the dinosaurs live in.

Communication, Language and Literacy

This term we will continue to work on our speaking and listening skills, both independently and as part of a group.

In Literacy we will continue to practice writing simple words by sounding out as well as practicing writing those tricky words. We will be continuing to write captions and short sentences. We will also be introducing the use of capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between words.

In Maths we will begin addition and counting on, we will move on to focus on subtraction and finding one less. We will also have a big focus on number bonds of numbers to 10. We will also begin to have a go at solving problems involving simple addition and subtraction. Children will also have lots of opportunities to explore time, money, weight, distance and capacity through a range of hands on activities.

Expressive Arts and Design

In art the children will be continuing to develop their drawing and painting skills as well as exploring colour mixing. We will be exploring a variety of equipment and resources to create different textures making our own mosaics.  After half term we will be designing and creating our very own dinosaur egg. In Music the children will be exploring the sounds of a range of instruments and continuing to practice keeping the beat of a song and tapping out simple rhythms. As always the children will learn and perform a range of songs to do with our topic.

Understanding the World

The children continue to consider similarities and differences between themselves and others and among families, communities and traditions, particularly in relation to Chinese New Year. We will also be having a focus on ‘old and new’ in relation to kitchen items and children will have the opportunity to compare old and new products and consider how and why these have changed. We will also be looking at the concept of floating and sinking, making our own predictions and testing them. During Forest Learning we will be going on our own journeys, using simple mapping techniques such as journey sticks to record them. We will also be looking very closely at the changes that happen outside as we move from winter to Spring!

Personal Social and Emotional Development

This term our PSED will be focused upon showing kindness to ourselves and others. As well as this we will be looking at positive behaviours and the behaviours we like to see in school.

As was the case last term, children will take part in regular PE lessons. This term the children will be focusing on dance and ball skills. In particular, they will be focusing on developing their confidence and skill when moving and when travelling on or around balancing and climbing equipment.

We will continue to send home reading books from the books we have read in school, please continue to read with your child as often as possible. Last term we sent home the green and red words we learnt in school last term, please continue to practice these at home. We will also continue to send home sound cards as and when a new set of sounds has been completed in school.
