 The Curriculum:

Our main focus this term will be “Historical Humans”.  We will be learning about people in the past who have made important changes to how we help others particularly in the field of nursing.  We will investigate the lives of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole to discover how they changed and improved care in hospitals and taught others about the importance of good hygiene.

In English, we will be basing our work on the book “Vlad and the Florence Nightingale Adventure” which explores the events from the point of view of a rat.  We will also use other high quality texts to inform our writing including:  Hospital Dog, The Tiger who came to Tea, Knuffle Baby, Emily Brown and the Thing and Dr Xargle.  We will be writing instructions, writing our own stories, writing setting descriptions and lists as well as poems.  We will also continue handwriting practise.  We want all our children to be confident and articulate speakers and so will continue with lots of Talk For Writing activities and discussion work.

In Phonics we will continue to follow the Success for All Phonics Programme of study – do remember that you can access our parent portal for more information and guidance as to how we teach phonics at The Rissington School.  https://parents.fft.org.uk  You can also access this resource through the phonics page on the school website:  https://www.therissingtonschool.org.uk/Phonics/.

In Maths we will be working on number, place value, multiplication, division, fractions, time, statistics, money and position/direction.

In Science the main focus is plants and how they grow, but also how to keep healthy and why it is important.  We will begin by getting straight out onto the school grounds and planting our own vegetables and flowers.  We will then learn how to look after our plants and will watch and observe them over time. We will also conduct experiments to see how different conditions effect the plants growth.

We will also be looking at how our food and gardens have changed over time and we will use the topic to work on our geographical mapping skills, using and creating our own maps as well as learning compass points.

In Art we will be studying portraits and investigating the work or Pablo Picasso by creating our own work in his style.  In Music we will be learning how to play the recorder.  In RE we will be following the Gloucestershire syllabus by thinking about what it means to be Jewish and how we care for our wonderful world.  In Computing we will begin to use our brand new laptops to learn various keyboard skills.

Summer term sees us in summer uniform, which should comprise of a school blue polo-t-shirt, grey shorts, trousers, summer dresses in blue check; black/dark coloured school shoes.

In PE we will be learning - Net and Ball skills, Yoga, Country Dance and preparing for Sports Day with athletics.  It is important that your child comes to school in appropriate and correct PE kit.  Summer PE kit should comprise:  blue t-shirt, shorts/skort, long socks and suitable outdoor training shoes.  Sun cream and a hat is also required as most of our PE will be outside.

Homework remains unchanged.  Please read as much as possible with your child/ren (ideally everyday) and complete the reading record for your class teacher/TA to see.  Spelling lists will be sent home each week and a maths activity will form part of the weekly homework.
